Joe Nieuwendyk Award - Whitby

Rookie of the Year

Joey was a lacrosse player in a class of his own, beginning in minor and continuing through Junior "A". In 1982 Joey won the Junior "A" Rookie of the Year Award as a second year Midget. Joey captained his Whitby Warriors to 2 Minto Cups in 1984 and 1985, receiving the Minto Cup's Most Valuable Player Award, The Jim McConaghy Award, in 1984. Joey was forced to leave the game of lacrosse at the age of 19 to pursue a hockey career with the Calgary Flames of The National Hockey League, winning the Calder Trophy as hockey's Rookie of the Year in the 1987/88 season. To this day Joey remains one of the National Hockey League's finest players and one of lacrosse’s greatest ambassadors.
